The ancients referred to the aspects as familiarities or configurations. They only used the major aspects in the horoscope. The minor aspects are not always used unless they are very precise.

Let us describe the energies of the aspects so when we see their fractional divisions in degrees, we will be able to detect their casual nature.

Notes

1. Conjunction - This is often classified as a position rather than an aspect when two planets occupy the same degree of longitude. This is a constructive influence, although much depends on the nature of the planets. For the most part, two or more planets conjoined are a team and operate together.
2. Sextile - This is classified as a favorable aspect involving other planets in congenial signs and of the same polarity. Thus, these are planets in compatible elements. Planets in sextile are either in fire and air signs or earth and water signs. These pairs of elements get along well together, so it  denotes positive good and generates the activity that produces change and greater potential for the future.
3. Square -This is classified as most unfavorable. It represents the struggle of two forces at cross-purposes. Only through concentration and self-denial can the severe tasks it imposes be accomplished. Obstacles produce tremendous growth!
4. Trine - This is classified as the most favorable of all the aspects as it joins planets in agreeable signs and of the same element. Thus, producing good luck through ease of communication. The energy must keep operating so the relationship does not get lazy or too comfortable.
5. Opposition - This is classified as confrontational planetary influences resulting in resistance in a sign and through a house. These forces are working against each other. The goal is the same but their methods are very different. The only harmonious outcome is compromise.
6. Vigintile - This is classified as two or more planets or points that are 18 degrees apart. This position is traditionally considered slightly good.
7. Semi-Sextile - This is classified as favorable, but, may involve planets in inharmonious signs which may resolve in harmonious growth.
8. Semi-Square - This is classified as somewhat mitigated and a malefic aspect.
9. Quintile - This is classified as a mildly benefic aspect.
10. Sesquiquadrate - This is classified equally as unfortunate as the Semi-square, but less powerful.
11. Biquintile - This is classified as a harmonizing influence.
12. Quincunx - This is classified as mildly favorable. It operates through inharmonious signs with contradictory influences. However, it has unrealized possibilities through adjustment.
13. Decile - This is classified as development. It can show a specialized creativity that is partly developed. It can be the final stage of a gift that is already realized or can indicate interpersonal difficulties that arise from any kind of power or talent, whether it is used for good or evil.
14. Novile - This is classified as compatible. It is an aspect where any kind of work a person finishes will be seen to work well together. It indicates the nature of anything that the person achieves. Can show the nature of a marriage partner after they have proved to be compatible.
15. Septile - This is classified as potential. Shows the potential the person has to rise to the occasion and bring something extraordinary out of himself. Septile energy is receptive to inspiration.
16. Tredecile - This is classified as good fortune. Associated with a gift or talent being brought into expression that brings good luck, quite by accident, and the energy that makes unexpected and fortunate discoveries.
17. Parallel - This is classified as teamwork. Two or more planets that are equal distance from the celestial equator, with each Heavenly body being either North or South in declination. The influence is much like a conjunction.
18. Contra-Parallel - This is classified as separation. Two or more planets that are equal distance from the celestial equator, with one Heavenly body being North in declination and the other body being South. The influence is much like an opposition.
