The Astrological Planet

The Astrological Planet MarsThe red planet Mars has inspired wild flights of imagination over the centuries, as well as intense scientific interest. Whether fancied to be the source of hostile invaders of Earth, the home of a dying civilization, or a rough-and-tumble mining colony of the future, Mars provides fertile ground for science fiction writers, based on seeds planted by centuries of scientific observations.

Astrological Influences of Mars

Mars is the “fiery” Planet of Passion!  It is the Red Planet of energy, determination, passion, drive, courage, action, and the warrior for truth and justice. He is not afraid to break new ground, fight for the downtrodden, and if need be, go to war!

Mars has many dynamic characteristics. Among them are, bravery, boldness, decisiveness, initiating, frankness, and a very competitive spirit. These are leadership qualities that we should all aspire to and wish to cultivate while working with the energy of Mars.

Mars emits to us the power to start a project and see it through. It helps us tear down the old ways of doing things that don’t work any longer, and it makes way for the new to manifest in our lives. The Planet of power and passion dares us to go beyond our limits in balance with the energies of the Universe.

His energy helps us defend ourselves and those less fortunate, resulting in bravery, courageousness, and daring. Mars is in charge of how we assert ourselves and is always on our side to protect us when we use his influences wisely. His power helps us to initiate all our activities and he watches how we express ourselves, especially in anger.

The zodiacal energy of Mars can give us the courage to build upon these dynamic features, to become modern day leaders and to overcome any obstacles on our "Path to Initiation." We can almost control the natural forces with the proper understanding of "right action" when the energy of Mars is worked with.

However, when these zodiacal energies are not worked with properly, Mars has a very dark shadow side full of rashness, combativeness, and destructive rage. He can be violent and cruel when we have misused ourselves in anger, aggressive behavior, or when we abuse his gifts. Therefore, if this area in our natal chart is not balanced or being worked with, it can manifest cruelty and irresponsibility.

By working with our Mars energy, we are learning to work with the right use of power. In our society, power is the most sought after gift, and also the most abused. When we accept the burden of power and use it for a higher purpose, we are making ourselves a "Sword of Light" and not wielding a "Sabre of Darkness."

The energy of Mars can also help us slay "the dragon within." This dynamic energy can help rid ourselves of undesirable traits to make way for more desirable attributes to begin manifesting within us. Mars teaches us to turn our drives and impulses into constructive behavior.

The Romans celebrated the festival of Mars in the month of March, before an altar in the Campus Martius.

From "Mars," comes our word "martial" to mean war-like as in martial arts or martial music.

For the Alchemists, Mars represented Iron.

Mythology of Mars

Mars was known as Ares, the god of war; and as Nimrod, the god of the chase, whose mission it was apparently to dispel terror and fear. To the Greeks, it was Pyroeis or Pyrois, the fire. To the Chaldeans it was Nergal, called the "raging king" and the "furious one"; to the Babylonians, the god of war and pestilence, said to preside over the nether-world.

"God created the stars and the heaven for more than the sake of beauty. He gave them to us for interpretation so that we may live a more productive life. Man is superior to the stars if he lives in the power of superior wisdom. Such a person, being the master over heaven and earth, by means of his will, is a Magus, and magic is not sorcery but supreme wisdom."
-- Paracelsus
