The Astrological Planet

The Astrological Planet MercuryMercury is the second smallest planet in the solar system, larger only than Pluto, the most distant planet in our solar system. If Earth were the size of a baseball, Mercury would be the size of a golf ball. Viewed from Mercury, The Sun would look almost three times as large as it does from Earth.

The small and rocky planet Mercury is the closest planet to The Sun. Because Mercury is so close to The Sun, it is hard to see from Earth except during twilight.

Mercury speeds around The Sun in a wildly elliptical (non-circular) orbit that takes it as close as 47 million km and as far as 70 million km from The Sun.

Mercury completes an orbit every 88 days, speeding through space at nearly 50 km per second. Faster than any other planet!

Never more than 28 degrees from The Sun, Mercury is rarely visible to the naked eye.

  • From a stationary point about 28º in advance of The Sun, it retrogrades to an inferior conjunction with The Sun, after which it becomes a "morning star," visible on the Eastern horizon shortly before Sunrise.
  • From a stationary point about 20º behind The Sun, it advances by direct motion to a superior conjunction with The Sun, after which it becomes an "evening star," visible on the Western horizon shortly after Sunset.

Astrological Influences of Mercury

The Planet Mercury is the Planet of communication.

Mercury rules the intellect, awareness, logic, reasoning, the way we think and how we express our creative thought processes.

In ancient times when the gods and the goddesses influenced and ruled the affairs of humanity, Mercury was the “messenger of the gods.” He was the “winged messenger” who traveled back and forth between the gods and mortals carrying their messages to and fro.

In our world today he represents all electronics. The computer and the internet are among his favorites along with the telephone, fax machine, and anything that feeds us data and facts about our lives. He also represents the way we communicate our inner and outer responses to the outside world. This includes through our speech, writing, and the way we move through our environment. Basically, Mercury determines our ability to think and communicate.

For this reason, Mercury is the "Planet of the Mind." Mercury governs another level of the mind also, the “Higher Mind.” He guides us to a greater understanding of "higher consciousness" and through the mind leads us to a greater sense of purpose in our lives.

Mythology of Mercury

The Roman god Mercury and the Greek god Hercules, the winged messenger of the Gods, were endowed with the qualities that are associated with the influence of the planet Mercury. To the Chaldeans, Mercury was known as Nebo, the planet of warning. Mercury was also associated with Buddha, the wise.

"God created the stars and the heaven for more than the sake of beauty. He gave them to us for interpretation so that we may live a more productive life. Man is superior to the stars if he lives in the power of superior wisdom. Such a person, being the master over heaven and earth, by means of his will, is a Magus, and magic is not sorcery but supreme wisdom."
-- Paracelsus
