Astrological Influences of Saturn

The Planet Saturn is the “Grand Taskmaster” of the Zodiac and the most remote planet known to the ancients!

No other Planet in the Solar System teaches the lesson of responsibility like Saturn. He is the father of discipline, structure, laws, and rules. Saturn commands us to be organized, build a strong foundation in our lives, and have endurance and perseverance so we can experience success in our accomplishments.

The “Great Teacher” demands order and reason in our lives. He imposes limitations and boundaries. By dealing with these barriers created for us, we learn to accept serious and sobering responsibilities for ourselves and our  circumstances. Only through strength, understanding, and painstaking effort will we rise above these restrictions and reach our goals.

Saturn's motto is hard work and he abundantly rewards his students with “plenty.” He is the god of the material world. The good news is, when it is time to reap his rewards, we are exalted in his presence, his limitations fade away, and we have a clear, joyful vision of our purpose and service in life.

The Planet Saturn represents the authority side of ourselves. Since he is like a “father figure,” he teaches us to respect our elders, ourselves, and to do things right the first time. He encourages us to follow the rules so that the virtues of endurance, patience, and responsibility will prevail.

In relationship to Alchemy, when Alchemists and early Chemists used the name Saturn they were referring to its association with the metal lead. In fact, lead poisoning was once called the Saturnine colic.

Mythology of Saturn

Saturn was the ancient god of the seed sowing. His temple in Rome, founded in 497 B.C.E., was used as a state treasury.

In 2I7 B.C.E. the worship of Saturn was conformed to that of its Greek counterpart, Cronus, son of Uranus, and god of Boundless Time and the Cycles. There was a myth that Saturn in Italy, as Cronus in Greece, had been king during an ancient golden age and was the founder of Italian civilization.

Also associated with the Greek god Phoenon, "the cruel one," and the Assyrian god Ninib, patron of Agriculture, and one of the gods of the Pantheon.

"God created the stars and the heaven for more than the sake of beauty. He gave them to us for interpretation so that we may live a more productive life. Man is superior to the stars if he lives in the power of superior wisdom. Such a person, being the master over heaven and earth, by means of his will, is a Magus, and magic is not sorcery but supreme wisdom."
-- Paracelsus
