What Houses Represent
In a natal chart, the houses describe areas of life and fields of experience. They help show where planetary functions and sign expressions may become visible in a person’s life.
The twelve houses relate to themes such as identity, resources, communication, home, creativity, work, relationships, shared matters, belief, vocation, community, and inner life. How each house may be expressed or emphasized depends on the signs, planets, and aspects connected with it.
Four important points known as the chart angles are closely connected with the house structure: the Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven, and Imum Coeli (IC). Their positions depend on exact birth time and birth location, which is why an accurate birth time is especially important when interpreting houses and angles. Together, these angles form two major axes of the natal chart and help organize its orientation around self and others, private foundations and public direction.

The Twelve Houses as Life Areas

The First, Fourth, Seventh, and Tenth Houses are known as angular houses because they are associated with the chart’s four principal angles: the Ascendant, Imum Coeli (IC), Descendant, and Midheaven.
The Second, Fifth, Eighth, and Eleventh Houses are known as succedent houses, while the Third, Sixth, Ninth, and Twelfth Houses are known as cadent houses. Together, angular, succedent, and cadent houses provide a structural way of grouping the twelve houses.
